Biking in Idaho

Salmon is a small town in central Idaho surrounded by large expanses of wilderness, National Forest, and BLM land. This beautiful setting is home to approximately 3000 in the city area, and near 8,000 in the entire county of Lemhi County.

One of the most remarkable things about Salmon, Idaho is the tremendous views from anywhere in the valley. To the east of us lies the Continental divide and the Beaverhead Mountain Range. These 12k peaks are above timberline; snowcapped in the winter, and a recreational joy all year round.

Salmon is located at the confluence of the Lemhi and Salmon Rivers: both wild and scenic rivers with no dams above or below, so we enjoy the natural rise and fall of the waters through the seasons. The Salmon River is a rafting paradise with beautiful canyons both up and down river from Salmon. Salmon has many whitewater rafting companies to take visitors safely through the season's waters.

Skiing in the winter is fantastic with both numerous cross-country trails, and a nearby ski area on Lost Trail pass: a one hour drive to the north on the Idaho/Montana border. We are also a very popular area for snowmobiling, hiking, hunting and fishing.

Salmon is a full service town with a new hospital, nice golf course, ample parks for recreation and pleasure, a vibrant Business Innovation Center, a historical Sacajawea Center for tourist & recreation, an active Arts Council, healthy Chamber of Commerce, and good schools. We were recently elected as one of the Best 100 Communities for Kids.

About Surrounding Areas:

Salmon is located in an open valley in central Idaho surrounded by mountains. There are three ways to drive into town: From South Idaho on Hwy 93, from East Idaho on Hwy 28, and north from the Montana Border on Hwy 93.

  • Hwy 28 from the East: This drive brings you over beautiful Gilmore summit with the old ghost town of Gilmore at the top and also through the towns of Leadore, Tendoy, Lemhi, and Baker.
  • Hwy 93 from the South: This brings you from south Idaho and the Boise area, through beautiful Stanley Idaho, and Challis, then down the Salmon River Canyon through Ellis and Elk Bend.
  • Hwy 93 from the North: This brings you in from the Missoula and Hamilton Montana areas, over Lost Trail Pass, and through the small towns of Gibbonsville, North Fork and Carmen.

East

Baker Idaho is not really a town as it has no post office, but the locals and all maps still call the community located at about a ten minute drive east of Salmon as "Baker". Here you will find some lovely old houses, and many working ranches.

Tendoy Idaho is twenty miles south-east of Idaho with a small store and post office for its residents. This area also features many working ranches. You can turn at Tendoy and head up over the Lewis and Clark Highway, following the old trail that Lewis and Clark and their guide Sacajawea took with the Corps of Discovery as they first make their way into the Idaho territory.

Lemhi Idaho is just under 30 miles from Salmon on Hwy 28, and has a post office and store.

Leadore Idaho (Pronounced Lead-Ore, and named after the lead ore that was mined in the area at the turn of the 20th century), is 46 miles from Salmon. Leadore is a nice small town with a few restaurants, a gas station, post office and school with grades 1-12.

South

Elk Bend: is a small community a half hour's drive south of Salmon on Hwy 93. Elk Bend has s post office, store, restaurant/bar, and friendly neighbors.

Ellis & May: A little past Elk Bend is the Pahsimeroi Valley with Ellis and May Idaho. Ranching communities with a post office.

Challis: A one hour drive to the south brings you to the nice town of Challis Idaho.

North

Carmen Idaho: Five miles north of Salmon on Hwy 93, heading along the Salmon River valley, is the small "town" of Carmen with a Post Office, Grange and residential community.

North Fork: Continue down the Salmon River Valley, and you'll find North Fork Idaho where the North Fork of the Salmon joins the Salmon River. The Salmon River then makes a turn and heads west into the wilderness area, and Hwy 93 follows the North Fork up towards Montana. The town of North Fork has a great restaurant, some motels and RV parks, Post Office, store and churches.

Gibbonsville is 32 miles north of Salmon, Idaho along Hwy 93. This historic mining town still has residents in it's downtown area off the highway. It has a great restaurant, cabins for rent, Post Office and a few services.

Lost Trail Pass: At the border of Idaho and Montana is Lost Trail Pass with great cross-country ski trails, and a full-service ski area. There is also a nice hot springs resort with pool, cabins and restaurant.
